This course outlines the basics of chemistry and how this knowledge affects responses to hazardous materials emergencies.
Learning Objectives
1. Establish a baseline knowledge of the makeup and behavior of various chemicals
2. Understand the periodic table, atomic structure, and 22 groups of organic and inorganic chemical compounds
3. Learn the chemical and physical hazards linked with various materials in emergencies/spills
4. Attain an understanding of the chemistry of fire and the toxicity of products associated with combustion as relevant to derivative compounds and hydrocarbons
